Resolution Reveal

I finally did it!  Remember this post?  Installing open kitchen shelving was number one on my 2013 resolution list this year.  I have been wanting to install open shelving in my kitchen since moving in but I couldn’t get up the nerve for something that seemed so permenant and that most people were trying to talk me out of.  However, I felt like my upper kitchen cabinets were closing in on me and I knew I had to lighten the load a bit.

For two months, I took the doors off the fronts of the cabinets and lived with an open shelving concept.  I loved it for the simplicity of putting dishes away, grabbing a glass quickly and seeing my everyday plates, bowls and a few other items out on display.

Here’s a photo of my kitchen before:

the two cabinets to the left of the window are the ones I planned to remove

And here are a few shots of the install:

not sure why only part of the wall was painted and not the other half when we pulled off the cabinet

And here is the after:

Please excuse the paint samples painted on the wall.  I’m currently trying to find the perfect shade of gray with a hint of blue and it’s not going well as you can see from the amount of paint swatches on my wall!  Any suggestions for me?

And for all of you skeptics out there about open shelving, don’t worry I saved the cabinet just in case I change my mind someday.  Or, if we do decide to move, the next owner might not be a fan of open shelving so the cabinets are in storage just in case.

Feels great to cross something off my resolution list.  Now the research for new countertops, hardware and paint can begin.    I will be sure to show you the progress.

    1. Thanks so much for the paint suggestion! Looked the color up online and it looks so pretty. Will head to paint store tomorrow to get a sample and will let you know how it turns out.

  1. Looks great! I just painted my bedroom a blue/gray. I have a ton of light in the room –
wickham gray (b Moore) was the best for my room. Also tried Alaskan husky and pearl gray among many others. Good luck!

  2. Try Metro Gray (Benjamin Moore) or Silver Dollar (also Benjamin Moore). Both are beautiful grays with bluish tints!

  3. looks great! do you love it? are you using the shelves to store your everyday grab-and-go pieces for the most part?

    1. Carrie-yes, I love it! I store all of our everyday dishes on these shelves so that I don’t leave dishes out that dust piles on top of them. Except for the third shelf…..dusting will have to take place. =)
