Hope everyone had a great long weekend. It’s the day after Labor Day, what I traditionally see as my New Year’s Day. This is when I hunker down, get back into a routine, resolve to exercise more, be more organized, eat better, etc. (All the things I’ll break by Halloween.) With the kids back in school, I feel like I can get my s*$# together again!! One of the things I’m resolving to do this fall, is get back to reading. I swear with all the back episodes of Breaking Bad, Newsroom and finishing off House of Cards on Netflix, I’ve gotten out of my habit of going to bed to read.
If anything is going to inspire me to start reading again, it’s these gorgeous books from Penguin Classics. I’ve talked about them before in gift guides and just think they’re perfect for every home. How gorgeous are these?!
Designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith, they’re hardcover editions of the world’s favorite books–think Jane Austen, Victor Hugo, Oscar Wilde. So great reads and also, the perfect way to add some beauty to a bookcase.
My cousin’s girlfriend, Emily, writes a great (and super popular!) fashion/lifestyle blog called Life with Emily. She posted this picture on Instagram yesterday–even one of these books makes a pretty statement. Love the idea of these as a baby shower gift–pick your friend’s favorite book to pass along to the next generation.
Here’s how another blogger used them on her shelves–pick your favorites based on content or color…I know probably not what serious readers want to hear, but…
I also noticed that Penguin recently launched the classics in a newly designed line called Penguin Drop Caps by type designer Jessica Hische.
These are classic picks laid out in alphabetical order and on a color chart of sorts. So A is Jane Austen, B is Charlotte Bronte, G is William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, K is Sue Monk Kidd’s Secret Life of Bees, etc. And the color palette of the spines end up ordered like this:
Think I’m going to get this for the kids as a Christmas gift (Santa can bring the plastic from China!) so we have them all in our house. So beautiful.
Great post! I use Labor day and the “end of summer” as a way to get back into the groove of things (work out more, get back into reading, etc). When I saw this book at Anthro I knew I had to start a new book collection! And surprisingly Brian didn’t get mad when I came home with it! 🙂 Thanks for featuring my photo/blog. Love how the other blogger styled the books as well.
