In yesterday’s post, I showed you photos of my powder room and described my obstacles. Here are the design choices I came up with so that we could finally have some privacy and close the bathroom door.
First, I set out to find a sink that would be a better scale for a bathroom this size. While the pedestal sink was rather small, it still took up too much room. Most powder rooms in older houses utilize a corner and put in a corner sink. I didn’t have this option because the doorway took up the entire entrance to the powder room. Instead I focused on finding a wall-mounted sink. I needed to research the different sizes and styles available, so I went to Studio 41 in Highland Park to check out their selection of sinks. I also looked online at several sites such as Signature Hardware, Vintage Tub, and my personal favorite, Elite Sinks.
Most wall-mounted sinks are still shaped like a bowl. To maximize my space, I needed to go with a rectangular shaped sink. I found a sink made by Elanti which I knew would be perfect.
I also made sure to order a special bottle trap to fit under the sink rather than the larger S-shaped ones you see under most sinks. I felt like I needed something that would fit the modern design of this sink.
Next, I chose a mirror from Ballard Designs that laid flat against the wall and brought some softenss to the room to off-set the modern, clean lines of the sink.
The best part of this whole transformation……I gained SEVEN inches of extra room. While that might not seem like a lot, it makes a world of difference. Just ask my friends, I make everyone turn around once before they can leave the bathroom.
And lastly, I took down the bamboo shade and had a roman shade made at Calico Corners. I wanted to have a shade with some color and pattern to off-set all of the white, rather monochromatic materials in the room. I chose not to have it lined so that it would still let in sunlight.
Just a reminder….here’s the before:
And here’s the AFTER:
Don’t dismiss the importance of scale when choosing items for a room. In the end, I really didn’t need more square footage to make the powder room work, I just need to adjust the scale of the items in the bathroom.
Looks awesome Amy! Great solution for a tiny space. Being hugely pregnant in that bathroom while potty training a toddler was like a comedy routine. 😉 Love the sink too!
Thanks Gretchen! Glad to hear you had the same obstacle and it wasn’t just me.
I had no idea they even made sinks that size! It looks great — plus no major remodeling mess or hassle (or expense)! The plants in the bathroom are very feng shui — supposedly prevents flushing money and energy away…
Stephanie-good to know that the plants are helping not to flush money and energy away! When are Tessa and I coming to help organize? =)
You are both more than welcome to come anytime!! I would love it and could definitely use some organizing help!! Let me know when you’re available…
it looks great! love that little sink and the roman shade is very cool.
I love it!! Always looking for ways to maximize small spaces…
Thanks Jennie!
