Back to School Kids’ Study Spaces

September! WHAT? Seriously, where did the summer go? Into a haze of 100 degree days… So, today is the first day back to school for many kids across the country including the Chicago area. Wish Amy luck as she drops her eldest off at his first day of kindergarten! (Stay strong Amy…)

So, recently there’s been some debate as to whether or not your kids should study in the same place again and again–according to a recent article in the NY Times, there is benefit to moving around to different areas–apparently it improves retention. That being said, my personal experience is that it’s best for you and your kids to each have a designated area to store your personal “office” stuff and always have a place where you can go to focus–anything to get them to focus and not watch TV! So, in honor of back to school, I thought it would be fun to highlight stylish and functional study areas for the little ones.

Of course a beautiful built-in desk under a window is always a good solution–lots of natural light. (I also saved this pic in my inspiration folder for my daughter Madeleine’s”big girl” room!)–check out the ceiling and gorgeous custom daybed!

This is such a great use of space in an awkward corner–this would also be a good solution for a small closet–FYI the hanging organizer for pens and markers can be found at IKEA if the kitchen area; IKEA also has those thick lacquered shelves.

These loft beds remind me of my college days–such a practical solution for freeing up space for a study area (obviously for older kids.) I would break up the wood a little by using a different chair–like this fun bright green Bentwood desk chair from Crate & Barrel. And btw, I hope the kid who lives in this room is also cleaning her own floors…

Looking for an easy affordable solution to add to a small room? I like this one from Land of Nod where each piece can be bought separately for $149. You could even use just the desk part next to a bed in lieu of a side table if space is really limited.

Remember, a study area doesn’t have to be a traditional desk–I like this option for younger kids especially who just need an area that’s clear and makes sense for writing (drawing, etc…)

Happy back to school to all you parents and good luck this school year! Hope Charlie’s first day goes well, Amy!
