Did any of you see the cover story of last month’s Elle Decor? Reese Witherspoon’s Ojai home is feature and it’s gorgeous! (For a touch of gossip, apparently it’s also where Robert Pattinson hid out during his whole Kristen Stewart cheating scandal.) Anyway, I just saw that a couple of weeks ago the property went up for sale for about 10 million–nothing like a nice cover shoot will do to help your property values…if only the rest of us could take that approach!
The property is on 7 acres about an hour outside of Los Angeles.
Inside, the palette is neutral which balances out the heavy wood ceiling. Interest is brought in through different textures–a jute rug (apparently from Pottery Barn!), leather chairs, metal table. I also love how the living room has different conversation areas thanks to benches, little stools, chairs and a couch. This is a great way of filling up a large space.
The position of furniture in the photo below is just perfect. Not your typical two chairs opposite a couch. Try positioning your chairs so they are diagonal from each other. (Note, that this positioning is slightly different from the photo above of the same room–the stylist moved the chair so that there’d be more interest in the photo next to the fireplace…if only we could all move our furniture to the optimal view every time someone switched angles in our home.)
Such a creative use of space under these stairs. And one thing Amy and I both noticed about this house is its brilliant use of space. Accessories like the antlers and the stool are used to create interest high and low and feel empty space in an appropriate way.
Notice how by hanging the photo to the left of the bookshelf under the single sconce, this little nook feels complete. Otherwise, the sconce would have seemed kind of random next to the bookcase–now the picture balances the scale of that bookcase.
This house is full of AMAZING chairs–from the 19th century caramel leather ones in the living room to the eclectic dining collection below. Love the idea of mixing up chairs around a table.
The built-in bed nooks for the kids’ rooms are just darling.
Here’s a pic of the kitchen that wasn’t featured in Elle Decor
Definitely filing away these pics for inspiration shots for a project (Spanish Colonial living room) we’re working on currently.
Thanks Melissa! I have never been but hope to visit someday. I didn’t know you grew up in Ojai.
Wow! Incredible house! I grew up in Ojai, and it totally blows my mind when US Weekly shows Reese cruising through our humble little downtown shopping with Jim and her kids! It’s like…Ojai? Really? I couldn’t get out of that town fast enough as a teen, but now I love to go back and visit. It really is beautiful there. Thanks for sharing 🙂
