Paint Change

We just got home from a weekend visiting my family in Iowa and as always it will take a day or so to get back into the reality of my life in Evanston.  I find it so hard to come back after a relaxing weekend at my parent’s house where everything seems so chill and I swear people don’t worry about anything.

Anyways, it is this state that I came home to a new paint color in my kitchen!  I decided to have our painter do it while I was gone so that I wouldn’t keep peeking and change my mind after he painted just one wall.  Also, having it done completely when I came home meant there would be no turning back, at least for a few months!

My kitchen use to be Restoration Hardware Silver Sage (top paint circle).

While it looks light in this photo, it was actually much darker in person.

This is probably a more accurate photo of color.

While I do really like this color, I’ve grown tired of it in the kitchen.  It’s hard for me to love a kitchen color for a long time because I spend so much time in the kitchen which causes me to always want to change it up a bit.  At the same time I realized I want a kitchen that is bright and light!

I debated for months and tried many, many, many different paint samples in my hunt to get the perfect gray with a slight undertone of blue.  The blue undertone is hard for me since I am a person that does not particularly like baby blue shades. I also debated about keeping a more saturated paint color in the kitchen because my cupboards and table are so light, but I remember reading once that if you have a light colored room and all of your furniture is darker, you are putting contrast in a space which will create confinement.  So, I decided it was okay to go a little lighter on the walls so as not to create the “confinement” feel.  After going through every Benjmain Moore paint swatch in the store, I decided to go to Restoration Hardware and stick with what I know.

What I know is that Restoration Hardware seems to always get it right and is a safe bet.  There’s something so easy and perfect about going into their store and looking at the color you want and then just picking either the light, medium or dark shade of that color.  So, off to Restoration Hardware I went and ended up choosing from their Flint Collection, with Pumice (the top paint circle) being the winner.

Here’s a sneak peak of the new color, Pumice.  It was starting to get dark outside by the time we got home from Iowa last night so I will post a better photo later this week.

It’s definitely on the lighter side which I love and everything feels so crisp and clean now in the kitchen.  Best of all, the trim was painted as well and there is nothing better than freshly painted white trim, right?

My advice to any of you struggling to pick a paint color is to definitely check out Restoration Hardware’s paint line.  The colors are always the perfect shade in my opinion and it’s not too overwhelming.  Finally, you can also always have your paint store color match if you prefer a certain brand of paint.
