Size Matters

Blog up and running again! Seriously stressful when you have an issue with your domain provider and they give up your name!! I couldn’t write a post for yesterday so spent Sunday night watching too many episodes of the Walking Dead instead….obsessed.

So, there are a few rooms in my house that just don’t fit a standard sized rug…we all have them… My family room takes a 8×17. We’ve also been searching for a client’s family room that requires an 8×8. It seems like all the major stores carry the standard 4×6 or 5×7, 8×10 and 9×12, but not every room can accommodate one of those sizes. You know we’re big fans of bound carpeting as an option, but that’s actually better for larger pieces since you have to buy the full width. Luckily some of our favorite stores are actually realizing this is an issue and there are some decent options out there to buy off the rack in a wider range of sizes.

West Elm just launched their special order rugs–six different designs available in 13 different sizes. I love the 8×8 and 2.5×12…both sizes that I think are rarely available in main stream stores, but work in so many homes (think smaller-sized bedrooms and hallways.) This zig zag dhurrie would look great in a long entry hallway.

This Safari rug would look amazing in a nursery or under a simple Parsons-style desk in a home office.

The prices are actually really good–i.e. you don’t appear to pay a premium for a “custom” size” but they have a long lead time of about three months and they’re not returnable so make sure you measure!

Home Decorators and Rugs USA both offer some good choices for more unusually-sized rooms. These sites can be super overwhelming though, but I like that Home Decorators has a good search function by size.

Room & Board has Rugs by the Inch which I’m kind of obsessed with. We LOVE their rugs. Amy cried when she had to sell her gorgeous links rug a few months ago (not to be dramatic or anything…) Now, the prices are definitely not cheap, but we can definitely attest to the quality of these rugs so think of it like an investment. Amy mentioned this teal rug in her post on Friday and good news is, it’s available in any size!

One of our favorites for family rooms is the Arden Low Loop in ivory/grey which is a soft, beautiful low shag-like rug that goes with any type of decor and is really cozy for lying down to play or watch TV.

Overstock.com also has some good, affordable choices in those more random sizes. One of the ones we suggested to our client is this Moroccan-inspired rug in 8×8.

So if you have a room that doesn’t fit a standard 8×10, don’t get frustrated, there are options out there!
