It’s our last day in Nova Scotia and while I always love going home, it’s sad to be leaving such a beautiful place. One of my favorite things to do is explore the architecture of the area–we’re about 20 minutes away from a UNESCO World Heritage town called Lunenburg that is full of gorgeous old homes–Cape Cods, Queen Anne Revivals and Victorians are the most common.
But, thanks to a world-renowned local architect, Brian MacKay-Lyons, and his partner Talbot Sweetapple, modern architecture lives large on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. I had a chance to go for a long walk yesterday and photograph some of their work in my parents’ “neighborhood.” Check out these beautiful places–right out of Dwell Magazine–and a fun, unexpected addition to the country landscape.
This one is known by locals as the “Sliding House”
The “Messenger House” sits atop a hill overlooking the ocean
This is Brian MacKay-Lyons’s personal property, named Shobac, with his home on the right alongside four rental “cabins.”
Here’s a shot of the Shobac rentals that I pulled from their website–perfect place to spend an evening with a glass of wine!
And, here are a few of their other projects–I love the way they take full advantage of their locations–somehow blending in with the landscape as well as juxtaposing it
And while this “Cliff House” is amazing from this angle…
…check it out from this angle…
And city dwellers, don’t worry, they can work with you too!
Check out more pics of other projects and see interiors of the above houses on their website.
