Continuing Nate Berkus week…Anyone catch Nate Berkus’s Greenwich Village apartment in this month’s Architectural Digest? In honor of Nate’s book signing tonight at Jayson Home & Garden, we thought it would be fun to show it off–best part, he’s got before and afters (who doesn’t love a good before and after?!?)
The obvious in this picture: Nate is totally adorable
The less obvious, but just as important: note the light-stained floors in a chevron pattern and the bookcases…no over-styling here, just books, books, books, in different positions so it’s still really interesting
Before of the family room
In the after shot, you can see that the brick remains, but is painted a softer cream color. The big change is that Nate went a little against the trend of open floor plans and closed up the kitchen pass through–see the kitchen shots below–the new window pane in the kitchen keeps things feeling open and allows all the light in, but makes the kitchen feel cozier.
The new kitchen window is mimicked in the new glass doors–love how the black frames really ground the light brick walls. One other thing to note, is that if you know Nate’s work, you know he loves to incorporate organic and personal elements into his designs–below you see this in the mantel and in the table display.
Don’t you love seeing “SAVE” on his kitchen cabinets?? From the before to the after, you notice that Nate just painted the existing cabinets, added new hardware and molding along the top to bring the cabinets all the way to the ceiling and give that built-in look.
In the image below, Nate used natural woven shades and curtains to make two small windows appear larger. Hanging the two photos hanging below the wall unit keeps the focus away from the wall unit and more at eye level on the artwork–the dark from at the bottom balances the darker shades on either side.
Bathroom before
Bathroom after–as mentioned, Nate really likes organic elements so this wallpaper (including on the ceiling!) envelopes you in a mineral pattern–kind of like being in a cozy cave I would say.
Headed out to the book signing tonight and we’ll have a special giveaway tomorrow so stay tuned!
