Gifts for Kids from a Design Lover

In case you didn’t manage to get all your holiday shopping done between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we thought we’d share some ideas for the kids in your life. You love design and imparting an appreciation for it can happen! You don’t have to give in to the long lines of Toys R Us … ok, maybe for that coveted Barbie house you might have to, but resist the urge to buy everything plastic and maybe pick one gift you and your child will appreciate!

1. Books are always a great gift and the greats are available in these gorgeous covers by Penguin Classics–would be fun to give a full set that could be held on and passed down.

2.These Kubix plank “blocks” let your little budding architect’s imagination go wild. They’re great for all ages–from a child’s first effort stacking to building more intricate designs. In fact, these come highly recommended from one of the most creative 8 year olds I know.

3. I first saw this this map decal in one of my favorite LA-area stores, GumTree, in Hermosa Beach (I profiled it here.) It is so perfect for a child’s room or playroom. The colors are vibrant and with removable stickers of different flags and symbols, any child will enjoy exploring the world.

4. I’d love dressing up a simple shelf with this truck book holder–from the fun orange color to the simple, modern design, it would pop in any child’s room.

5. This teepee is the perfect hideout for kids. I love the touch of Americana in the fabric.

6. Looking for a simple little gift or stocking stuffer? These little animal hooks (other designs are available at DwellStudio) are just darling…line up a few as wall art.

7. I’m eyeing these leather bookends for my in-progress nursery. Such a fun update on a classic. And, you could put those Penguin Classics between them!

8. Is a puppy on your child’s list? Ok, maybe this won’t completely satisfy them, but adorable right? This little lamp would add a touch of whimsy to any room.

Finally, while this gift idea isn’t really design related, I wanted to give you another idea. One of my major influences when it comes to design is travel. An appreciation for other cultures and the opportunity to see the world has opened up my eyes and always contributed to creativity. I hope to one day pass that along to my own kids and one easy way to start is with Little Passports. A friend started this subscription service that has your child go on monthly adventures with two characters–Sam and Sofia. Here’s a pic of the starter kit they get:

Such a cute idea and makes such a great gift! The kids love it when a package shows up each month–might be a good suggestion for grandparents.
