I’m slowly working my way through Madeleine’s big girl room design (I didn’t list this and the baby’s room as resolutions yesterday because it’s just a given I have to do them!) Here’s the inspiration board I’m working off right now:

One thing that seemed to intrigue a lot of people is the idea of painting the ceiling a bright pink–Benjamin Moore’s Peony (not to be confused with their lighter pink peony.)
I saw the picture below by Artistic Designs for Living and was totally inspired to try a painted ceiling. Then, I was further encouraged to move forward with my plan when I read this blog post from Emily A. Clark.

So, here’s Madeleine’s ceiling before–a flat white BM ceiling paint with C2 Paint’s Shiitake on the walls.

My little helper and I headed to the paint store (M was so excited we were going to paint her room pink!)
And finally, the paint went on…scary!!! Seriously though, I was scared because as the paint went on, I kept questioning my decision–too dark? too pink? what was i thinking??

And here’s the final look. LOVE it. Madeleine’s room is at the top of the stairs as you come up to the second floor and I love it when we walk up and she’s so excited to go into her room. She LOVES it.

The painted ceiling does darken the room a little. So, two things I’ve done–the original design has a light blue paint for the walls. I bought a quart and tried it on the walls and it didn’t look right so instead, I stayed with C2’s shiitake but at 50%. So, the walls are a brighter, but still warm, neutral tone. I’m also going to switch out the bulb in her pendant for a brighter, less yellow one.
I know not everyone is going to love this, but I would highly recommend trying color on a ceiling–it’s just so fun and a child’s room or playroom is a great place to go bold. I’ll share more pics as the room comes together…bed arrived this week, but we haven’t set it up yet!
I love this idea. I am thinking about painting Nate’s big boy room, and may go this route. Here’s my concern though. His room is pretty small. Would a painted ceiling be overwhelming? I am also considering doing a striped wall at the head of his bed. Decisions decisions! His room is pretty “blah” and I want to do something fun, but don’t want it to be “too much” in a small space.
I’ll definitely do a post on some fun alternatives to painting a ceiling–I debated a few different options!
Tessa–I love this! Good for you for being BOLD! I have no problem painting a piece of furniture or other things, but a ceiling is something I’ve never even considered. Thank you for the inspiration.
so great!
I LOVE IT!!! It definitely pays off to be bold! So cute with the window treatment. Can’t wait to see the rest of the room once it’s done!!
