I can’t believe I’m starting a post about interior design with When I was on the Disney cruise… but I am… So…. When I was on the Disney cruise, there was this great murphy bed in our room. Every night, housekeeping would fold it down for one of the kids to sleep on. It got me thinking about why we don’t use murphy beds more. Seriously, they’re pretty genius. Yeah, it feels a little throw-back, but they make sense!
Unless you have guests on a really regular basis, why clutter a home office with a bed?
They’re obviously perfect for small apartments like a studio where you don’t want your bed on display like in this NYC apartment…
But, they’re also perfect even when you have more space and you just don’t want to waste a room on a guest bed (or need a second guest bed!) So many of us have guest rooms with these great beds that just sit empty for 90% of the year. Why waste a room?
The photo below could be a small bedroom or if you have a big home, you could turn a walk-in closet into a little guest bedroom with a murphy bed.
Or a kitchen cupboard for that matter!
Now we just need a client willing to go murphy for their next guest room.
greg LOVES murphy beds and honestly our office/guest room would be the perfect place to do something like this…
Did you see this on Apartment Therapy? Someone handy reused the mechanism from an old sofa bed. I think it’s genius! We might do something similar in our basement.

I hadn’t seen that–oh the things people think of! Thanks for sharing.
