Fiddle Fig Trees

I’m a big proponent of having some green in your home, but there’s one green trend that I can’t seem to jump on the bandwagon with everyone else.  Even Tessa and I have two different perspectives on this trend loved by so many designers. The Fiddle Fig Leaf tree is just about the hottest plant around right now and has found a spot in so many empty corners. After a few years in the spotlight, I thought this trend was on its way out this year, but if you take a look at Pinterest, it’s still going strong. I think one of the main reasons I’m not on board is because they seem so obtrusive and a little out of place.

When I think of these trees, I tend to think of them swallowing up a room….case in point:

Ok, maybe that one is a little exaggerated and I get that they’re emphasizing the tall ceilings and want a very natural feeling in the room, but come on all you notice is the big tree. (In fact, while the individual pieces in this room are beautiful, overall it feels kind of like a styling job gone awry!)

There’s no shortage of photos online showing how designers use these trees in homes.

I think I would much prefer something in this scale–totally different feel, but I like it better. This is actually the one that Tessa has in her living room–from IKEA!

So, what are your thoughts on the fiddle fig tree?  Have you jumped on the bandwagon?  Oh, and if you’re considering a fiddle leaf fig, just remember they need lots of natural indirect sunlight and limited water.

  1. I love the tree and have one in my family room and one in my stairwell! I think they have such a beautiful sculptural feel. personally, I think every room should have at least one living green thing in it…be it an orchid, a small maidenhair fern, or a larger fig tree…not only does it freshen up a space, but it’s so good for the air. and I believe the fig tree is one of the better ones for filtering air…
