In yesterday’s post, we introduced you to Cheryl from North Carolina’s sewing area in her bedroom. She had already purchased some shelving from Container Store and a desk from IKEA, but was asking us for help creating a fun yet functional space. Since we were working with the existing furniture in the room, accessorizing was the key to this design. The area was first and foremost in need of practical storage, but Cheryl wanted to make sure it was also fun and vibrant. Below are links to products that we’d recommend Cheryl get based on our inspiration photos. As you’ll see, we agreed on a few things including the need for a comfortable upholstered chair and various types of textured and colored storage, but have a few different ideas on everything else! Make sure you read yesterday’s post first for the full context.

My goal for this space was for the bedroom and craft space to live peacefully together and incorporate more storage solutions to hide items that are currently on the open shelves. As a reminder, my recommendation is to move the desk below the window. To make the two spaces flow better, I would replace the white countertop with a dark wood countertop (butcher block). Her desk was bought at Ikea and a butcher block is one of the choices for this desk. Changing the white countertop to a wood countertop would help tie in with the dark pieces of furniture she currently has in her bedroom. Adding curtains to the window would help enlarge it and frame the new desk placement, it would also help blend the craft space into the bedroom and give all of the wood and white shelving a softer look. I chose a simple blue/natural fabric for the windows so it would fit in well with her already neutral bedding and not look too busy with all of the open shelving.

In addition to the obvious need for storage on the shelves, two things drove my design: a need to bring darker tones and more texture for interest on the white metal shelves and incorporating more color to make the overall bedroom more fun as Cheryl requested. As mentioned yesterday, I pulled the color blue from her existing bedspread. Because the furniture in her bedroom is all dark wood, I made sure to bring those darker tones into the corner by using dark baskets, but kept the space light and fun with the patterned chair, fabric roman shade and white accessories. The bright patterned (and affordable!) chair brings in a sense of femininity to Cheryl’s corner and adds a punch of color. I would also recommend that Cheryl bring in some blue and white accessories to the other side of her bedroom to balance things out–perhaps things as simple as a white vase for fresh flowers and a piece of art work over her bed that incorporates the colors in her new sewing area.
