Making Over a Reader’s Living Room

Hope you guys enjoyed some of the inspiration shots we posted yesterday for Stephanie’s living room. We love hearing from people who are reading the blog and looking for some help.

Here’s what Stephanie’s room looks like now–a great space with lots of light, gorgeous wood floors, molding and loads of potential!

Stephanie wants:

  • A warm, comfortable space for entertaining, but also family-friendly
  • To create privacy
  • A neutral color palette
  • A room that leans traditional, but has a contemporary feel too
Amy and I sat down last week (before she had the baby, and as a side note, she and little William are doing great!) and created the following design board for Stephanie:

Stephanie's Living Room

Solid drapes with linen sheers (1) will create privacy, but keep light coming in. They will also unite the two different sized windows. We’d suggest hanging them almost to the molding and about 1.5 feet wider than each side of the window. We like the idea of a textured linen or cotton with a oatmeal color that would complement the proposed smokey taupe wall color (4.)
As you saw in our inspiration shots, we wanted to create a focal point in the room by putting a new couch in the front window area (2). We’d pull the sofa out about two feet so that it floats in the room and allows for easy closing of the drapes. We’d flank the sofa with a tripod lamp and on the other side a round table with a table lamp that is very different, but still mimics the shape of the tripod lamp. This will make the room feel more collected than matching side tables and lamps. A rustic, but clean-lined wood coffee table (3) keeps the space warm and its open base makes the room feel open and airy. The open based also allows us to see the beautiful, traditional rug. We’d also recommend pulling out some of the blue in the rug and using it in throw pillows on the coach.
Stephanie loves barrel back chairs, so we decided on a gorgeous dark brown velvet one (5.) We juxtapose this on the other side of the room, with a taller modern, wingback chair in a much lighter linen and beautiful brass nailhead (6). The chairs are very different, but with swooping down arms, they complement one another nicely. A solid side table pulls in the caramely shades of the coffee table and breaks up all the legs of the couch, chairs and coffee table. A pharmacy lamp completes the vignette and makes for a perfect little reading area.

Stephanie promised us she’d keep us posted on progress in her room. As we talked about with her, she should see the design board as a road map for her living room so while she might not pick exactly the items we’ve chosen for her, their shape, size and colors can guide her as she shops!
