Go Bold

First, congratulations to our Chicago Blackhawks for winning the Stanley Cup last night! It was a happy night in our house. I spent the first two periods half watching the game, half writing this post (well, and I guess also a pretty significant amount of talking in amazement about the fact that hockey hair is still around.) Ok, back to design…

The summer is always a time when I want bright, bold colors around me. These two Toronto homes I found on the StyleatHome.com are just perfect examples of throwing out conventional thinking around color and pattern and just embracing the eclectic.

In this condo designed by Montana Burnett, the couple doesn’t stop a smaller space from going all out–no fear here! Nothing matchy, matchy here–it’s like the designer and home owners freed themselves from the worry that patterns and colors would have to “go” together–they picked what they loved and it ended up looking amazing. I’m obsessed with this eating area with couches…ok, they wouldn’t survive for a day in my house with three little kids or for that matter me with a glass of wine, but it’s so original.

More inspiration from the townhouse of Style at Home section editor Catherine Therrien and her husband. In this case, there’s a unified color palette throughout the home–reds/oranges with blues–but she plays with pattern.

Such a good reminder to have fun with your decorating.

  1. I’m in Chicago this week for a photoshoot and I heard so much hooting and hollaring last night in the streets below my hotel. Fun times!

Loving this post by the way. I’ve been more inspired by patterns lately..this was perfect fodder for my small planned additions for our master bedroom this summer.
