Goodbye to Expedit?

Ok, first things first…while I am certainly no fashion blogger (hey, sometimes I’m challenged to even step up to the title of design blogger!) but I did have my favorites from last night’s Oscars. First, Cate Blanchett really epitomizes what a movie star should be. She just oozes sophistication and a little bit of mystery the way old Hollywood did–before we knew all the gory details of their lives thanks to TMZ and Perez.

Love Lupita! I mean, who doesn’t?? And as soon as I saw her get up and dance with Pharrell, I loved her even more because let’s face it, Hollywood takes itself WAY too seriously…you’re actors, people, get over yourselves and have some fun.

And these two mamas-to-be looked amazing!

Now, back to IKEA. I have very mixed feelings as I write this post (not to be dramatic or anything…but  I was hanging with Hollywood last night) My husband sent me an article last week about how IKEA is discontinuing our beloved Expedit shelving system. My first reaction was: WHAT?!?  NO!!!  You know we love Expedit…it’s kind of like an academy award winning bookcase. With such simple lines, the Expedit is a natural in either a play room

Then, after I calmed down and actually read the article, I realized it makes sense and kudos to Ikea for doing this despite a little uproar by Expedit fans (and by uproar I mean a Facebook page with more than 25,000 people asking IKEA to keep Expedit!) One of the ways you can identify an Expedit is the thick edges. Well, apparently those edges are also killing a lot of trees.

The outer edges are obviously thinner which will save costs and help IKEA reach its sustainability goals and according to this gizmodo article, the edges will also be a little more beveled so more kid friendly.

Kallax IKEA

I was amazed to read in the same article that IKEA uses 1% of the world’s wood supply. Amazing right? So, little changes to products can actually have a pretty significant impact. No word yet on timing (hey, they may even change their mind!) nor how many colors the Kallax will be offered in since IKEA has introduced a slew of amazing colors in the Expedit recently. But, if you’re a fan of Expedit, I’d suggest getting to IKEA now…they’re not above getting rid of a perfectly designed fan favorite–remember the perfect four poster Edland bed?! Yeah, I’m still pissed that I didn’t get that one while it was still available!

  1. it’s funny–I do love Expedit and have it in 2 rooms of my house, but the proportions between the frame thickness and shelf thickness have always felt a bit “off” to me. I think i’ll like this new version better! thanks for sharing.
