Another Kitchen Island Solution

Ok, short post today…it was a beautiful day in Nova Scotia and I spent it shooting a gorgeous beach house that I’ll write about next week and swimming at the beach so it’s late and I’m just getting around to writing my post!

As I talked about in a post a couple of weeks ago, when you don’t have room for a big kitchen island (oh so popular these days!) there are still a lot of great alternatives. I thought this one from my parents’ cottage kitchen was worth sharing.

They had this old jam cupboard (or jelly cabinet) they were using as storage in their old kitchen.

When they were redoing their kitchen, while it was going to be a more modern, white IKEA kitchen, they knew they wanted to keep a rustic element and that cottagy feel. They also knew they wanted an island, but didn’t have room for a “normal” sized one. So, when they ordered the countertops, they ordered an extra piece of butcher block to place on top of the jam cupboard and give it more surface area thereby meeting both needs!

This is a great solution if you have a piece of furniture you love and want to repurpose it. Or, if you’re on a budget, check out garage sales and Craig’s List for a cupboard and order a countertop from any big box store like Home Depot. And remember, it doesn’t have to be country feeling–if that’s not your thing (it’s not really mine…) you could pick a much more contemporary piece than this one and get the same impact!
