Two Perspectives on a Master Bedroom

Yesterday, we introduced you to our friend Carrie’s master bedroom. She and her husband Greg are looking for ideas on how to decorate this new second floor addition. They live right by the beach in Southern California and want to the room to be a cozy and serene space. They love blues, grays and whites. The only piece of furniture they want to keep is their bed.

Below are our two design perspectives. Yup, lots of explanation in here, so if you’re not into it, just scroll down to see our boards…for you others who need a little more info, we thought we’d give you a peek into our brains as we put these boards together!

Here’s what the room looks like currently (for more pics see yesterday’s post)

Master Bedroom

Tessa’s Design

I wanted to play off the colors of the beach at sunset (seriously, not in a cheesy way, but rather because colors are richest and deepest at that time of day!)–a palette of caramely brown and different shades of blue and gray.

Since windows are such a big part of this room, I decided to really play up the large glass doors by using a graphic patterned fabric (1.) The two windows above Carrie’s bed would bring the caramely brown color and some texture into the room with bamboo shades, this would also tie in the colors of the beams. Because the windows will be busier, when it comes to the bedding, I suggest simple white sheets, a gray coverlet, shams with a subtle gray print and just a pop of color in a chevron print throw pillow.

In a complete contrast to the dark wood bed, I love the idea of white lacquered nesting tables and gray lamps (3.) Coincidentally, Amy and I chose exactly the same lamps for Carrie! The smaller of the nesting tables could be pulled to her new dark gray linen wingback chair (5) when she reads with a glass of wine in total bliss in her new room. 😉 I brought the gold undertones of the bamboo shades into a different part of the room by adding the ikat print pillow to the chair.

I was really inspired by the deep marina blue color in a couple of the photos I discussed yesterday. A fun way to bring that color into the room would be to paint a dresser similar to this one from Restoration Hardware (4) –i.e. very square and chunky feeling to balance the weight of the bed. If Carrie and Greg choose not to do a TV in their room, I would recommend a big mirror like this one (6)–I love how its shape mimics the medallion print in the drapery fabric-to go over the dresser to continue infusing those warm gold tones into the room. Otherwise, a mirror like this could also go over their bed between the windows.

Amy’s Design

Ah, to live by the beach, definitely a dream of mine and I have to say I was very envious when designing this room. I chose to go with a monochromatic palette of blue, gray and white to keep the feel of the room light and crisp. I LOVE Serena & Lily’s Wyeth duvet (1) (in fact I have it in my own bedroom) and decided that would be the perfect item around which to base the room. The soft colors are tranquil, but the pattern is just busy enough that the fabric makes a statement in a bedroom. Since Carrie’s headboard is dark wood, this light duvet would soften it.

At the end of the bed, I would add two x-benches in a cream fabric with grey piping (2.)  Using two small footstools will allow Carrie to pull one over to the chair (5) and create a cozy reading nook.  Also, by using two footstools rather than a long bench, it breaks up the long beams, long dresser and long headboard. Glass and metal side tables (6) would flank the bed and add just a touch of glam to the room (I did say my style was Casual Hollywood Glam!)

Above the bed I would use a series of thin, silver frames (8) that Carrie could frame artwork that has meaning to her and her husband or photographs that she has taken from trips.

I envision soft gray drapes (7) blowing in the ocean breeze…(okay, back to reality)…on the large, glass doors. But, to bring some texture and wood (to balance the bed) into the design, like Tessa, I would use dark bamboo shades on the rest of the windows to keep things casual.

I recommend a long, narrow dresser in a dark wood (3) for the wall opposite the bed. I would suggest hanging a mirror (4) to bounce around all of that gorgeous sunlight she has in the room. However, in order to purchase everything else, Carrie may want to forgo the mirror and buy a TV for her husband to keep him happy!  That’s what I had to do, so I could purchase the Wyeth duvet for our own master bedroom.
